President Barbara R. Snyder

Barbara R. Snyder is president of the Association of American Universities. Prior to that, she served as president of Case Western Reserve University from 2007 to 2020, where she encouraged interdisciplinary excellence, catalyzed institutional collaboration, and reinvigorated alumni engagement and fundraising.

Our Board of Directors

AAU’s 11-member Board of Directors consists of member presidents and chancellors and includes: a Chair, Vice Chair, Past Chair, seven additional Directors, and the AAU President (ex-officio).  

Eight of the Directors serve a term of three years (with a renewal option of one additional term) and two Directors, who have been members for five years or less, serve a term of two years (without an option for renewal). Directors are elected by the member presidents and chancellors.

The Board is the governing body of the association and among other responsibilities, it proposes policy positions for consideration by the membership, adopts policy positions on behalf of the membership as warranted, approves the association’s annual budget, and works with the AAU President and staff to carry out the association’s agenda.

Executive Office


Barbara R. Snyder
President
Responsible for the overall activities of the association and works with the AAU Board of Directors and the member presidents and chancellors to define and implement the association's mission and agenda. She also oversees the Chief Academic Officers (CAO) constituent group.

Leah Norton
Chief of Staff
Responsible for management, coordination, and implementation of cross-team initiatives, task forces, advisory boards, and presidential working groups on behalf of the president for AAU’s top priorities. She also oversees the planning of the Chief Academic Officers (CAO) constituent meeting.

Edweana Burke
Executive Assistant to the President
Responsible for providing executive, committee, and development support for the Chief of Staff and AAU President. She also staffs the Chief Academic Officers (CAO) constituent group, the Membership Committee, and the biannual membership meetings.


Federal Relations


M. Matthew Owens
Executive Vice President and Vice President for Federal Relations
Provides strategic leadership and management to the association’s priorities and serves as back-up to AAU president as needed. He oversees AAU’s federal relations activities and has primary responsibility for overall federal budget and appropriations advocacy, and manages AAU's Council on Federal Relations (CFR) constituent group. He also shares responsibility for issues related to research costs and other regulatory and compliance issues.

Pamela Davidson
Associate Vice President for Federal Relations
Responsible for higher education funding, policy, and tax issues, including accreditation, student aid, college affordability, charitable giving, endowments, and Department of Education international education programs.

Julia Jester
Associate Vice President for Federal Relations
Responsible for funding and policy issues related to the National Science Foundation and National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and research integrity issues. She shares responsibility for other higher education and research policy issues related to American innovation & competitiveness and scientific openness & security.

Lizbet Boroughs
Associate Vice President for Federal Relations
Responsible for funding and policy issues related to the National Institutes of Health including regulatory issues, research costs and compliance, and access to scientific materials. Her portfolio also includes immigration and visa policy for students, scholars, and faculty.

Hanan Saab
Assistant Vice President for Federal Relations
Responsible for funding and policy issues related to the Department of Defense’s Science & Technology programs and the Department of Energy’s Office of Science and ARPA-E. She also shares responsibility for other higher education and research policy issues related to American innovation & competitiveness, scientific openness & security, and U.S. universities’ global engagement.

Taylor Henry
Federal Relations Officer
Provides policy, legislative, and analytical support to the federal relations and policy teams. She monitors and researches legislation, regulations, and policies, covers hearings, and represents AAU at meetings.

Ashleigh Jones
Executive Assistant
Supports the executive vice president and vice president for federal relations and the vice president for communications as well as related AAU working groups, meetings, and activities. She staffs the Public Affairs Network (PAN) Steering Committee and assists in the planning of the PAN annual conference.

Beth Stanley
Federal Relations Assistant
Supports the federal relations department and various federal relations-related AAU task forces, working groups, meetings, and activities.

Ryan Bock
Federal Relations Assistant
Supports the federal relations department and various federal relations-related AAU task forces, working groups, meetings, and activities. Assists in the management of AAU’s General Counsels Committee, monthly meetings and annual conference.


Science Policy & International Issues


Tobin Smith
Vice President for Science Policy & Global Affairs
Provides strategic leadership and management to the association’s priorities. He oversees matters relating to science and innovation policy, broader impacts of science, and AAU’s international activities. He shares responsibility for matters concerning research costs and other regulatory and compliance issues including facilities and administrative costs, export controls, scientific openness and security, public access to research results, and technology transfer. He also staffs the Senior Research Officers (SRO) constituent group and serves as AAU’s liaison with the Global Research-Intensive Universities Network.

Associate Vice President and Counsel for Policy and Federal Relations
The AVP and Counsel for Policy and Federal Relations serves as the association’s lead on intellectual property and technology transfer issues. The AVP also plays a key role supporting AAU’s policy and federal relations work in areas that require legal expertise, such as tax issues related to research, information technology, open and public access, research security policy, and other regulatory matters important to America’s leading research universities. The AVP also staffs the AAU General Counsels constituent group.

Natalie Tynan
Associate Vice President for Immigration and International Issues
Responsible for immigration, international students and scholars, and other international issues. Shares responsibility for other research policy issues including science and security, export controls, science diplomacy, and related higher education and regulatory matters.

Meredith Asbury
Senior Policy Officer
Responsible for policy projects and assisting with federal relations activities relating to immigration, science and security, technology transfer, economic development/engagement, and regulatory reform. Leads AAU activities relating to Golden Goose Award and the Toward and Open Monograph (TOME) Initiative. Co-staffs the AAU Association of Graduate Schools (AGS) constituent group and supports graduate and undergraduate education as it relates to specific federal programs.

Anne Ganten
Executive Assistant
Supports the vice president for science policy and global affairs as well as related AAU working groups, meetings, and activities. She also assists in the planning of the Senior Research Officers (SRO) annual conference.

Survey Research & Institutional Policy


Kenneth Goldstein
VP for Survey Research & Institutional Policy
Provides strategic leadership and management to the association’s priorities. Oversees AAU’s public polling, institutional surveys, and research studies in support of AAU’s advocacy messaging and campaigns. The vice president oversees AAU’s institutional policy activities and leads projects on a variety of topics of importance to America’s leading research universities.

Emily Miller
Deputy Vice President for Institutional Policy
Leads and manages AAU’s institutional policy projects, initiatives and grant-funded activities including the AAU Undergraduate STEM Education initiative and the AAU PhD Education initiative. She also staffs AAU’s STEM Network and the AAU Association of Graduate Schools (AGS) constituent group and serves as liaison to the AAU Arts & Science Deans group.

Kimberlee Eberle-Sudré
Assistant Vice President for Research
Leads AAU’s data and analysis efforts across a wide range of research and higher education policy issues and directs policy-related projects and initiatives. She also staffs the Membership Committee and serves as liaison to the AAU Data Exchange (AAUDE).

Tara King
Higher Education Project Manager
Supports the policy department’s advancement of strategic and grant-funded initiatives. She provides direct support to the Undergraduate STEM Education initiative and the PhD Education initiative and other post-secondary institutional projects. She also staffs the STEM Network.

Taylor Shotwell
Policy Research Associate
Works with the Assistant Vice President for Policy Research and the full policy department to support AAU’s policy and federal advocacy agenda. Conducts research and analysis related to AAU’s federal relations and advocacy activities as well as AAU policy initiative.

Meara O'Malley
Policy Assistant
Supports the Associate Vice President of Policy, Assistant Vice President for Policy Research, and the Higher Education Project Manager with various meetings and activities related to AAU’s undergraduate and graduate education initiatives. Also assists in the planning of the Association of Graduate Schools (AGS) annual conference and the Undergraduate STEM Network annual conference.

Giacomo Squatriti
Survey Analyst
Responsible for gathering and analyzing surveys and others forms of data to gain strategic insight into public opinion on higher education issues.


Communications


Pedro Ribeiro
Vice President for Communications
Provides strategic leadership and management to the association’s priorities. He oversees and directs AAU’s public affairs, communications, campaigns, and media relations activities. He also oversees the Public Affairs Network (PAN) constituent group.

Rob Marus
Associate Vice President for Communications
Directs AAU’s writing and messaging, ensuring message consistency and clarity as well as utility in reaching AAU’s strategic communications goals.

Daniel Kleine
Senior Digital and Social Media Relations Officer
Manages and maintains AAU’s digital media footprint. He works closely with staff to ensure that AAU’s entire digital presence is timely, relevant, appropriate, innovative, informative, and creative.

Kritika Agarwal
Editorial Officer
Manages AAU’s constituent and public outreach operations by the timely drafting, delivery, and placement of AAU’s member communications and other related communications products.


Office Operations


Roxanne Murray
Vice President for Administration
Provides strategic leadership and management to the association’s priorities. She oversees AAU’s operations, finance, IT, meeting planning, and human resources and serves as AAU’s chief diversity officer. She also oversees the Membership and the Audit and Finance Committees.

Tom Bozzo
Chief Information Officer
Responsible for AAU's technology strategy, operations, and security.

Eileen Fox
Chief Financial Officer
Responsible for AAU’s finances, investments, and employee benefits. She also staffs the Audit and Finance Committee.

Raquel McKeveny
Director of Meetings
Responsible for all logistical planning and on-site management of AAU’s constituent group meetings and various other in-town meetings and events. She also coordinates the Partners constituent group.

Andrew Parrish
Data Systems Analyst
Responsible for planning, implementation, training, and support of organizational technology and data-driven initiatives, systems, and services.

Sean King
Human Resource and Office Operations Coordinator
Responsible for day-to-day tasks supporting AAU's office operations including human resource management, benefits, and finance.
