AAU joined 89 other associations and organizations in urging Congress “to support and prioritize the mental and behavioral health needs” of students in higher education. The associations’ letter notes that the mental health crisis among college students has long been under addressed and has worsened during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Friends of Institute of Education Sciences, a coalition of 38 higher education organizations and universities including AAU, sent a letter encouraging House and Senate appropriators to provide at least $815 million for IES in the FY23 Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies appropriations bill.

AAU President Barbara R. Snyder wrote House and Senate appropriators to thank them for the recently signed H.R. 2471, the Consolidated Appropriations Act making final appropriations in FY22.

The Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) Coalition, which includes AAU, sent a letter to the leadership of the House and Senate Agriculture Appropriations Subcommittees requesting the full authorization amount of $700 million for AFRI in FY23; Congress provided $445 million for AFRI in FY22.
AAU joined ACE and 20 higher education associations in a letter to Congress outlining priorities for provisions related to STEM education and scientific research and innovation in the America Creating Opportunities for Manufacturing, Pre-Eminence in Technology, and Economic Strength (COMPETES) Act of 2022 (H.R. 4521) and the U.S. Innovation and Competition Act (S. 1260)

AAU joined ACE and 13 other higher education organizations in sending a letter to the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee expressing concerns regarding the Department of Veterans Affairs’ recent 85-15 policy reset and changes in the requirements for a 35% exemption.

AAU joined ACE and 31 other organizations on a letter to Senate HELP Committee leaders urging them to adopt a amendment by Senator Chris Murphy to add the ‘‘Temporary Reciprocity to Ensure Access to Treatment Act,” or TREAT Act to the PREVENT Pandemics Act (S. 3799).

AAU joined CUPA-HR, APLU, and ACE on a letter to the Department of Agriculture to request a 90-day extension of the comment period on the NPRM to make amendments to the Agriculture Acquisition Regulation.
The Energy Sciences Coalition, of which AAU is a member, sent a letter to congressional leadership supporting the inclusion of Department of Energy provisions in the final competitiveness legislation package.
President Snyder sent a letter to House and Senate leaders outlining priorities for several key provisions that Congress is discussing as part of the conference process for the Senate-passed USICA and the House-passed America COMPETES Act.
