Following is a statement by Association of American Universities President Mary Sue Coleman on the need to fully fund the efforts of America’s leading research universities to combat COVID-19
Americans are looking to research universities and other scientific institutions to lead in the fight against COVID-19. We applaud Congress for acting to deliver additional funding for research and other resources to battle COVID-19, protect our economy, and provide some relief to students, colleges, and universities. Congress must do more in the weeks ahead to bolster the resources and protections provided to students, researchers, universities, laboratories, hospitals, and medical professionals.
America’s leading research universities are at the forefront of this battle, and we need additional funding now for research into the cures, treatments, and vaccines that America and the world badly need. Our researchers and physicians are the world’s best; in partnership with the federal government and the private sector we can beat this pandemic.
