Northwestern University President Morton Schapiro and former Lewis & Clark College President Barry Glassner together wrote an op ed in the Washington Post titled “Students on both ends of the economic spectrum face challenges in college.” The article explores the challenges of serving students of all backgrounds, focusing on two groups: first-generation college students from low-income communities and children of privilege.
In the article, Schapiro and Glassner argue that “colleges need to do more to properly serve both the advantaged and disadvantaged groups.” The article also gives suggestions for how colleges and universities can fulfil their duty to “find the particular way that each [group] can be helped to succeed in school and in life after graduation.”
