President Speaks: Colleges must prioritize foreign languages

Indiana University president Michael A. McRobbie wrote an op ed in Education Dive titled “President Speaks: Colleges must prioritize foreign languages.” He cites a recent report from the Modern Languages Association which showed U.S. institutions had cut 651 foreign-language programs between 2013 and 2016, a stunningly high number.

In the article, he writes that colleges and universities need to continue to adopt “ a more forward-thinking strategy when it comes to the foreign language acquisition needed for the U.S. to maintain its position as the world's leading economic, political and military power, and for its states to compete nationally and internationally.”
