AAU President Mary Sue Coleman wrote an op-ed to express my deep concerns for how public universities are governed. Poor board governance has led some AAU institutions to struggle to maintain their identity and mission, provide the highest quality education, manage internal conflict, and combat changes to their institutional autonomy.
We must try to guard against our governing boards falling victim to competing political and ideological forces. It may be time to reinforce appropriate governance principles and practices to further the missions of our institutions.
