AAU sent a letter to Department of State Secretary Mike Pompeo and Department of Homeland Security acting Secretary Chad Wolf to request that the departments provide additional guidance to address longer term visa status flexibilities, particularly the need to extend flexibilities to include new international students who enroll for the fall term. The letter also requests waivers for the in-person visa interviews for F-1 and M-1 visa applicants, extended remote learning flexibility, extending graduating international student’s visa status, prioritizing optional practical training and curricular practical training guidance, expediting J-1 and H-1B visa processing for medical professionals, and the reinstatement of H-1B premium processing. The letter highlights the importance of implementing these recommendations to allow maximum flexibility for the researchers on the front line of the fight against COVID-19.
