AAU, Associations Request Withdrawal of Race and Sex Stereotyping Order

AAU joined ACE, APLU, and 27 other higher education associations on a letter to Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs Director of Division of Policy and Program Development Tina Williams to urge the office to withdraw Executive Order 13950 on “Combating Race and Sex Stereotyping.” The letter lists several reasons the executive order should be withdrawn, including: the order’s chilling effect on efforts “to build and sustain non-discriminatory and non-hostile workplaces and learning communities;” the burdensome and invasive level of detail sought by the office in its request for information; the potential for costly compliance work; and the limitations it imposes on free speech on campus. Though the associations also oppose race and sex stereotyping, the “timing, content, and discordant tone of the Executive Order has created concern, confusion, and uncertainty for federal contractors across the country, including colleges and universities.”
