Manufacturing & Emerging Technologies 
 

Purdue University

In May of 2023, Purdue University announced a partnership with the India Semiconductor Mission to advance R&D and educational programs in areas such as “chip design and fabrication, advanced packaging, semiconductor materials, and embedded system design.” With the goals of the U.S. and India initiative on Critical and Emerging Technology (iCET) partnership in mind, this collaboration between Purdue and the India Semiconductor Mission will leverage Purdue’s research infrastructure and educational capabilities with India’s impressive talent pool to help design and manufacture semiconductor chips for years to come.

Rice University


Rice University was the first major research university to establish physical roots in India by establishing the Rice-IITK Collaborative center in 2020. “It is envisaged that the Center will foster thriving research for the development of long-term solutions to meet the ever-increasing global energy demand.” Research areas include carbon capture, high energy physics, energy storage, and solar photovoltaics (nanotechnology used in solar panels).
 
 

 

University at Buffalo

In May of 2022, University at Buffalo signed an inter-institutional memorandum of understanding (MoU) with five IIT’s (Indian Institute of Technology) – Bombay, Delhi, Jodhpur, Kanpur, and Varanasi, as well as a private university – Ashoka University. Research fields in the MoU include, but are not limited to “nanomaterials and nanotechnology, biotechnology, advanced sensors, photonics and cyber-physical systems including artificial intelligence.”

Case Western Reserve University

In an effort to advance engineering education, Case Western Reserve University's Case School of Engineering and Siegal Lifelong Learning program partnered with INSOFE, a research, consulting and graduate education institution in Hyderabad, India. Participants begin courses inn data science at INSOFE, then return to Case Western Reserve to complete masters degrees in biomedical or mechanical engineering. Twenty graduate students joined the inaugural cohort in 2021.

Pennsylvania State University

In June 2023, The Pennsylvania State University will assist with the development of a US-India Business Council (USIBC) catalyst event to start the INDUS X conference, which aims to “accelerate U.S.-India defense co-development and co-production” and which will feature “leading universities, incubators, and accelerators” in order to support the development of defense innovation projects.

Climate & Sustainability 
 

University of California, Davis

Announced by University of California - Davis in May of 2023, a two-year memorandum of understanding (MoU) has been established with the Department of Industries of the Government of Telangana in India to support Telangana’s government’s ambitious goal of half-a-million electric vehicles (EV) Policy by 2030. This is just one example of Telangana’s partnership with California on Zero-Emission Vehicle (ZEV) research.

University of Illinois

University of Illinois’ ADMI Institute for the Prevention of Postharvest Loss has an ongoing initiative with The Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER) called the Postharvest Loss Reduction Policy Initiative, which is a partnership to “inform and amplify the policy discussion regarding reduction of food loss and waste along the food value chain in India through joint research and policy engagement.” University of Illinois ADMI institute also has a separate partnership with the government of Bihar that “focuses on improving the adaptive capacity of rural communities to climate change through the promotion of sustainable and climate resilient agricultural practices such as conservation agriculture, cropping system diversification, and capacity building among other things.”
 

 

Tufts University



Tufts University’s Climate Policy Lab at The Fletcher School is collaborating with the Center for Energy, Environment, and Water (CEEW) in Delhi, India on a research project evaluating the natural farming experiment underway in Andhra Pradesh in cooperation as well with the Woodwell Climate Research Center. The agreement will also “involve research, fellowships, and sponsored events.”

Columbia University


Columbia University's India Program at the center on Global Energy Policy uses collaborative research with Indian think tanks and academics to support India's energy transition. The program has two main research focuses: eliminating energy poverty and decarbonization of the fossil-fuel dominated energy mix. Anchored around the semi-annual Columbia-India Energy Dialogue, the Center publishes reports, academic papers, factsheets and podcasts.

Biotechnology and Public Health 
 

Johns Hopkins University

Johns Hopkins University has a long history of collaboration with the Indian government and Indian academic institutions. In 2020, the Gupta-Klinsky India Institute (GKII) was established to enhance JHU's engagement and partnerships across India with government officials, academia, civil society, and the private sector. GKII has signed MOUs with multiple institutions such as IIT Mumbai Koita Digital Health Center, Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER, Pune), Ashoka University, Symbiosis University, and the Government of Uttar Pradesh. GKII focuses on three key areas: Tuberculosis and respiratory illness research, advancements in Artificial Intelligence and digital health technologies, and the development of higher education programs, particularly in research. GKII has established the Center for Infectious Diseases in India and the Maternal and Child Health institute in India. Thanks to alumni, the Institute has also established student exchange programs where annually 8 students from India and the US are supported to advance Indo-JHU research programs. The institute recently honored the outgoing Provost by creating the Sunil Kumar and Sumati Murli Student Training and Mentorship Fund to support PhD researchers conducting research in or related to India.

University of Southern California is partnering with the India ENIGMA Initiative for Global Aging and Mental Health on a research project as part of a global study of brain aging and Alzheimer’s disease. “This study will use novel machine learning methods to hypothesize how brain aging depends on lifestyle and psychosocial factors such as diet, family support, literacy, sleep, education, genetic risks, and more.” This five-year research project is supported by the National Institute of Aging.

Boston University

Boston University's Community Participatory Research Laboratory has an ongoing partnership with Central Research Services at Charter Arogya Mandal (CAM), which focuses on providing care to rural communities in Gujarat, India. The India Research & Outreach Initiative (IROI) combines community-based research and local outreach to engage in "collaborative health research initiatives with Indian healthcare institutions" and address health inequities in underserved populations in India.

Since the 1960s, Harvard's Global Research Support Centre India works to leverage the School's resources to help strengthen public health training and build capacity across the health sector in India. The Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health's new Mumbai-based India Research Center is designed to create new relationships with organizations across India.

University of California San Diego

The University of California San Diego established the 21stCentury India Center at their UC San Diego School of Global Policy and Strategy as a world-class hub for studying the challenges and opportunities facing modern India, as well as the common geo-political and economic interests and intersections India shares with the United States: “No other center on India in the U.S. will have the unique constellation of Pacific research and teaching assets of GPS. And, like our other centers, the 21st Century India Center will mobilize all of UC San Diego’s broad social science and STEM expertise to have empirically driven, rigorous analysis of policy and societal choices facing India and the U.S.-India relationship.”

Two branches of the Tata Institute for Genetics and Society (TIGS) were enabled in 2016 by a visionary philanthropic gift from the Tata Trust in India at UC San Diego and at InStem in Bangalore. TIGS is focused on the applications of the latest tools of genetics to improve healthcare and food security for societal impact. TIGS has built an extraordinary facility in Bangalore for leading-edge research targeting infectious diseases, public health, genetic disorders, and crop yields. The TIGS researchers have built an actionable wastewater surveillance system from 28 sewage treatment plants in Bangalore. TIGS is a key partner in a unique pan-India initiative for environmental surveillance and the development of innovative strategies for pathogen monitoring via a 3-year pandemic prevention initiative supported by the Rockefeller Foundation. A consortium of four city clusters -- Bangalore, Hyderabad, Pune, and New Delhi -- is working on surveillance for COVID-19, Dengue, and influenza, as well as anti-microbial resistance

Space Innovation & Discovery 
 

Jet Propulsion Lab (JPL) at the California Institute of Technology


In a historic collaboration between the NASA and ISRO (Indian Space Research Organization), NISAR (NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar) is the first time that NASA and ISRO have partnered on an earth-observing mission. Caltech manages the U.S. side NISAR on behalf of NASA via its Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, California. Scheduled to launch in 2024, NISAR will provide valuable data and measurements to scientists on a number of earth science topics “including landslides, groundwater loss, and the carbon cycle.” 

 

California Institute of Technology

Caltech and MIT run two NSF-funded LIGO observatories (Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory) in the United States. These observatories famously captured direct detection of gravitational waves. The Indian government is now building their own LIGO, collaborating with Caltech and MIT in the process. “The international collaboration has already resulted in an exchange of ideas and new relationships between the two countries. For instance, dozens of Indian students have been chosen to work with the LIGO team as part of Caltech's Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) program. In addition, Caltech plans to invite several visiting scientists from India to work on LIGO at Caltech.”

Brandeis University

In the Fall of 2021, Brandeis International Business School partnered with the India Institute of Technology (IIT) Jodhpur, offering MBA students the opportunity to complete their first year at IIT Jodhpur, then enroll at Brandeis for their second year in MSF, MSBA, or MA programs. The business school also partners with the S.P. Jain Institute of Management Research in Mumbai for a three-semester dual degree program.

Brown University's India Initiative fellowships fund summer research for senior thesis projects focused on India. Upon their return, students engage in community events like India Initiative seminars.

Carnegie Mellon University

In collaboration with India's Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB), Carnegie Mellon University agreed to support outstanding students from India looking to pursue doctorates in math, science and engineering. This agreement provided $2.4 million in fellowships to support a minimum of five Indian students each academic year.

Cornell University partners with Ashoka University and O.P. Final Global University in India, offering students the opportunity to study abroad for a semester or full academic year. These programs offer specific majors in Future Cities, Migrations and Mobility, and Democratic Challenges and Change. The Tata Innovation Center, where academia and industry collide, also houses Cornell academic teams.

The Daniel Guggenheim School of Aerospace Engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology has partnered with the Department of Aerospace Engineering at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India to offer a summer 2023 study abroad program for aerospace engineering students.

Michigan State University Extension has established a partnership with MANAGE, or the National Institute of Agricultural Extension Management. This collaboration strives to enhance the market opportunities for agricultural systems in both Michigan and India.

New York University

In September 2023, New York University and the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IITK) signed a memorandum of understanding to engage in joint research on critical areas (such as cybersecurity and AI, substantially expand doctoral exchange programs, and share teaching and research strategies. The NYU Tandon School of Engineering and IIT Kanpur have an existing dual degree program for doctoral students in electrical and computer engineering, which includes joint faculty research following a seed funding process in early 2024. In addition, NYU and IITK are planning a Dual MS program, a student exchange program and formal cooperation on entrepreneurship/startups.

Stanford University offers a study abroad program in India focusing in Engineering and Technology. The Stanford-India Biodesign program also collaborates with the All India Institute of Medical Sciences and the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, sending four India fellows to Stanford to apply biodesign process to healthcare projects each year.

Stony Brook University

Stony Brook University has signed two MOUs with Indian institutions: with Panjab University in 2019 and with the Indian Institute of Petroleum and Energy (IIPE) in 2023. SBU’s collaboration with IIPE involves a three-day workshop under the Energy and Environment: Hydrogen Energy Resource and Opportunity (HERO) scheduled for July 2023 that will aim to promote U.S. business involvement in bidding for large-scale Hydrogen projects in India. IIIPE is also submitting a proposal to establish a Hydrogen Valley Innovation Cluster: a $4 million, 5-year government and private sector funded center.

Texas A&M University

Texas A&M University College of Engineering offers its students a summer internship at the India Institute of Technology in multiple cities.

For several years, University of Utah offer of mechanical engineering Bruce Gale has been in collaboration with professor L Sujatha, from Rajalakshmi Engineering College in India. Professor Gale has helped establish a microfluidics lab using microfabrication and silicon processing. Professor Gale was also awarded the opportunity to develop these programs with hands-on work in India, giving lectures as well.

Vanderbilt University recently named Dr. V Ganesan, professor of mechanical engineering at India Institute of Technology Madras, as a Faculty Fellow Chair in the field of Thermal and Fluid Sciences and Engineering. They have also set up the Prof. V. Ramamurti Faculty Fellow Endowment at IIT Madras to honor the legacy of the pioneer in research, teaching and industrial consultancy.

Yale University

In 2019, researchers from Yale's Economic Growth Center collaborated with the Indian state of Gujarat to launch the world's first emissions trading system from particulate pollution. This market-based system has the government set a cap one emissions of particulate matter and allows industries to buy and sell permits in order to stay below the cap. Yale also established the India-Yale Parliamentary Leadership Program, which covers topics like Economic and Social Development in India, Democracy and the Secular State, India and Affirmative Action.
