Following is a statement by Association of American Universities President Mary Sue Coleman on the passage of a continuing resolution that funds the government until January 19, 2018:
We are disappointed that Congress has yet again delayed final action on FY18 appropriations and pushed budget negotiations to January. We are relieved, however, that a proposal to combine FY18 defense funding with a CR for domestic funding was not advanced. When Congress returns, it should not delay critical funding decisions any longer.
Research is most efficient and productive when consistently funded and American taxpayers deserve an effective government-university partnership. We urge Congress to reach a bipartisan budget deal as soon as possible to raise both the FY18 defense and nondefense spending caps to permit sufficient investment in scientific research, higher education, and other important programs that sustain our nation’s global leadership.
