The following is a statement from the Association of American Universities expressing support for a request made by a bipartisan group of senators to Education Secretary Miguel Cardona to delay new rules relating to Gainful Employment (GE) and Financial Value Transparency (FVT):
The Association of American Universities (AAU), representing America’s leading research universities, fully endorses the bipartisan letter that 20 United States senators sent last week to Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona urging him to delay new rules relating to Gainful Employment (GE) and Financial Value Transparency (FVT). The letter, led by Sens. Tim Kaine (D-VA) and Roger Marshall (R-KS), specifically requests that the Department of Education delay new GE/FVT reporting requirements from the current deadline of October 2024 to July 2025.
Institutions of higher education currently face significant challenges regarding the department’s Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) rollout; the new GE/FVT reporting rules would impose significant new burdens on both higher education institutions and the department. Given these dual major challenges, we agree with the senators that it would be best for Secretary Cardona to extend the GE/FVT implementation deadline to July 2025. Delaying the deadline will ensure that institutions are able to successfully put in place the systems required to provide the new data while also giving the department time to provide additional guidance to institutions to guarantee successful implementation.
