AAU President Calls for Swift Action to Protect DACA Students and DREAMers

Following is a statement by Association of American Universities President Mary Sue Coleman regarding the DACA provisions in H.R. 6136 , which failed today on the House floor:

I am deeply troubled by Congress’s continuing inability to reach a permanent, nonpartisan solution for the many young undocumented immigrants brought to our country through no fault of their own. Many of these bright young people are students, scholars, and scientists at our universities, who are contributing to our institutions and the U.S. economy.

AAU and its member universities have long called for a solution. While we recognize the good faith efforts of many in Congress, we cannot continue to let these young people live in uncertainty. Today’s failed effort in the House should not be the end. Congress should redouble its efforts and come together to forge a nonpartisan, permanent solution for DACA students and Dreamers to ensure they can continue contributing their talents to our nation.

Founded in 1900, the Association of American Universities comprises 62 distinguished institutions that continually advance society through education, research, and discovery.

Our universities earn the majority of competitively awarded federal funding for academic research, are improving human life and wellbeing through research, and are educating tomorrow’s visionary leaders and global citizens.
