FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Following is a statement by Hunter Rawlings, President of the Association of American Universities (AAU), on the report of the Task Force on Federal Regulation of Higher Education.
The Task Force on Federal Regulation of Higher Education has done an outstanding job of describing the ways in which regulation of higher education has become too costly, too complex, and too burdensome and of providing specific recommendations for reform. When regulations are excessive, contradictory, or duplicative, they not only take resources away from the education, research, and service missions of universities but also add to the cost of tuition.
The Task Force has given Congress and the Administration a path forward if they are willing to address these problems. The next steps are up to policy makers, and we hope they will act. We look forward to working with them to make real progress.
We wish to thank Senators Alexander, Mikulski, Burr, and Bennet for initiating this effort and Chancellors Nick Zeppos and Brit Kirwan for their leadership of the task force. They have performed an important service not only for the nation’s colleges and universities but also for students and the nation.
