AAU, COGR Express Support for Alexander-Murray Legislation on Regulation of Research

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The Association of American Universities and the Council on Governmental Relations today issued the following statement of support for the Promoting Biomedical Research and Public Health for Patients Act (S. 2742), a bill the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions is scheduled to consider on April 6.

The Council on Governmental Relations (COGR) and the Association of American Universities (AAU), which together represent over 200 U.S. research universities and institutes, greatly appreciate the efforts of Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-TN) and Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA), Chair and Ranking Member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee, to streamline administrative requirements on researchers funded by NIH. The legislation introduced by Senators Alexander and Murray would advance a number of important recommendations from the recent National Academies report, Optimizing the Nation’s Investment in Academic Research. We look forward to working with the Chairman and Ranking Member to move this bill through the legislative process with the shared goal of reducing unnecessary and costly regulatory requirements while ensuring accountability and proper government oversight.
