AAU urges Congress to provide at least $11 billion for the National Science Foundation in FY23.
The National Science Foundation (NSF) is the cornerstone of America’s basic research enterprise. NSF supports the fundamental, interdisciplinary, groundbreaking research and education needed to ensure that the United States remains at the forefront of science and innovation. A leader among federal agencies in strengthening support of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education, NSF competitively awards grants to support research, education, scientific equipment, and infrastructure.

AAU strongly supports strong federal investment in merit-reviewed research across all fields of study, including the existing disciplinary research and education directorates of NSF. AAU also supports NSF exploring new areas and models for research, including the creation of the Directorate for Technology, Innovation, and Partnerships to address growing technological and global competitiveness challenges.
AAU strongly supports NSF’s mission to develop a skilled technical workforce and a STEM-literate citizenry that can compete in the global marketplace. AAU also supports programs, including partnerships, designed to increase research capacity, diversity, equity, and STEM teaching and learning.
AAU urges Congress to surge investments in NSF research and educational programs to accelerate the U.S. innovation system as well as to educate more students in fields critical to national and economic security.
AAU encourages continued support for NSF-supported facilities and construction projects. Continued investment in major research equipment and infrastructure as well as midscale and laboratory instrumentation and infrastructure is essential if the United States is to have the tools and facilities necessary to conduct cutting-edge science and remain the global innovation leader. Infrastructure is also key to building strong research capacity across the entire nation.
