AAU, Associations Submit Amicus Brief Supporting Harvard in Grant Freeze Case Before 1st Circuit

AAU joined ACE and 25 other higher education organizations in submitting an amicus brief to the 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, urging it to affirm the district court decision granting, in part, summary judgment on behalf of Harvard in its lawsuit challenging the Trump administration’s freeze of its federal funding. The brief argues the administration’s actions threaten institutional autonomy and the broader “marketplace of ideas” that underpins U.S. higher education and fuels U.S. leadership in research and innovation. It further contends that the government’s retaliatory measures violate the First Amendment and cannot be justified by its role as a contracting party. AAU will continue to monitor developments in the case.
