AAU PRESIDENTS AND CHANCELLORS REAFFIRM COMMITMENT TO NATIONAL SECURITY AND AMERICAN VALUES

At the conclusion of their biannual membership meeting, the AAU presidents and chancellors crafted and released a statement reaffirming their universities’ commitment to U.S. national security and scientific openness. The CFR are encouraged to amplify the statement as appropriate.

NATIONAL SCIENCE BOARD RELEASES STATEMENT ON SECURITY AND SCIENCE

The National Science Board Wednesday issued a statement regarding science and security, reaffirming the Board’s support for NSDD-189 and recommending “that all institutions conducting fundamental research supported by NSF embrace transparency and rigorously adhere to conflict of interest and conflict of commitment policies.” In the statement, the NSB also “urges that the development of any new policies that restrict fundamental research beyond NSDD-189 engage all relevant stakeholders and consider both risks and benefits.”

 

AAU ELECTS VANDERBILT UNIVERSITY CHANCELLOR NICK ZEPPOS AS CHAIR

AAU Tuesday elected Vanderbilt University Chancellor Nick Zeppos as chair of its Board of Directors. His one-year term began yesterday with the end of AAU’s biannual membership meeting. AAU President Mary Sue Coleman said, “A notable legal scholar and a distinguished university leader, Chancellor Zeppos will be an outstanding AAU chair.”
