CONGRESSIONAL ISSUES

HOUSE PASSES ENERGY AUTHORIZATION BILL

The House on January 24 approved under suspension of the rules the Department of Energy Research and Innovation Act (H.R. 589). The bipartisan bill, introduced by House Science Committee Chairman Lamar Smith (R-TX), includes provisions drawn from several measures passed by the House during the last Congress. There is no confirmation that the Senate will act on this legislation.

EXECUTIVE BRANCH

PRESIDENT’S IMMIGRATION EXECUTIVE ORDERS DO NOT ADDRESS DACA

President Trump on January 24 signed two immigration-related executive orders, but neither addressed the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which protects from deportation undocumented individuals brought to this country as children. White House press secretary Sean Spicer said the President would deal with DACA participants “in a very humane way.”

The executive orders aim to accelerate construction of a border wall with Mexico and beef up immigration enforcement.
