AAU JOINS HIGHER EDUCATION COMMUNITY ON FAA UNMANNED AIRCRAFT SYSTEM NPRM COMMENTS
AAU, along with 27 other universities and higher education organizations, submitted comments to the Transportation Department regarding its recent notice of proposed rulemaking titled “Remote Identification of Unmanned Aircraft Systems.” The letter expresses support for the concept of requiring some form of remote identification for unmanned aircraft systems and, in principle, for establishing FAA Recognized Identification Areas, known as FRIAs. However, the letter also requests that universities be allowed to apply for designation as FRIAs and that applications not be time-limited. “Permitting universities to establish FRIAs,” the letter explains, “can help assure that low-flying UAS operations comply with institutional policies, do not conflict with other campus activities, and can be conducted safely, both as to the operators themselves and with respect to the university community and the public more generally.”
AAU, ASSOCIATIONS REQUEST EXTENSION FOR OSTP PUBLIC ACCESS TO RESEARCH OUTPUTS RFI
Yesterday, AAU, APLU, and AAMC submitted comments to the Office of Science and Technology Policy to request a thirty-day extension to the comment period for its request for information titled “Public Access to Peer-Reviewed Scholarly Publications, Data and Code Resulting from Federally Funded Research.” The request aims to “explore opportunities to increase access to unclassified published research, digital scientific data, and code supported by the U.S. Government.” The letter says that the initial thirty-day comment period is inadequate for our membership and other critical stakeholders to “solicit the broad-based input necessary to effectively and accurately respond to this request.”
If the extension request is not granted, comments will be due on March 16, 2020.
CNSR THANKS APPROPRIATORS FOR CONTINUED COMMITMENT TO DEFENSE RESEARCH FUNDING
The Coalition for National Security Research, of which AAU is a member, sent a letter to thank appropriators for their strong support for increased FY20 Defense Science & Technology funding – specifically for increases in funding to University Research Initiatives across all branches of the military. The letter says that increased FY20 funding will help address the constant threat of being “outpaced by adversaries that are seeking to exploit potential gaps in our ability to keep pace.”
