AAU sent a letter to House Education and Labor Committee leaders to offer comments on H.R. 4674, the “College Affordability Act.” Introduced by Democrats on the House Education and Labor Committee, the legislation will act as a vehicle to reauthorize the Higher Education Act for the first time in more than a decade. While the College Affordability Act is well-intentioned and addresses issues critical to AAU members – like improving completion rates and institutional accountability – it also has problematic provisions. These portions of the bill threaten to insert unprecedented federal control over universities and create complicated and expensive new reporting requirements.
