(Identical letters sent to Senators Edward M. Kennedy (D-MA), Judd Gregg (R-NH), Ernest Hollings (D-SC), John McCain (R-AZ), and Ron Wyden (D-OR))

Honorable Edward M. Kennedy
Chairman
Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions
United States Senate
Washington, D.C. 20510

Dear Mr. Chairman,

On behalf of the Association of American Universities, I am writing to express support for passage of a National Science Foundation authorization bill this year. As you know, H.R. 4664 passed the House of Representatives last week. We hope the Senate can pass related legislation as promptly as possible, and we appreciate your efforts to make that happen.

This bill recognizes that basic research is the best investment we can make to ensure long-term economic prosperity, and to train the next generation of technically proficient participants in America's workforce. Substantial increases in the NSF budget will help to achieve breakthroughs in knowledge that we cannot today predict, but that we can be confident will keep our nation at the leading edge of global science and technology for many years to come.

Thank you again for your leadership on this issue. Please let us know if we may be of assistance to you in any way.

Cordially,
Nils Hasselmo
President
