AAU Letter to All Senators on Behalf of NSF Reauthorization November 12, 2002
The Honorable Daniel Akaka Dear Senator Akaka: As the Senate reconvenes for its post-election session, we hope that you can assist in winning final passage of H.R. 4664/S. 2817, a bill to reauthorize the National Science Foundation (NSF). As you are aware, NSF is the only federal agency with responsibility for research and education across all major fields of mathematics, science and engineering. Increasing our nation's investment in mathematics, science and engineering is one of the best ways that America can ensure future economic and technological development and job creation. This important legislation will help to advance these goals by combining a significant increase in resources with guidance to the agency's management that will ensure the funds are well used. The House version of this bill passed the full House on June 5, and the Senate version of the bill was approved by the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee on September 18, and by the Commerce Committee on October 16. Having come this far, it would be very unfortunate if the 107th Congress were to adjourn altogether without achieving final passage of this vitally important legislation.
